The role of Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving is a critical one, as there is great potential for increasing the connections between alumni and all the schools of New York Medical College (NYMC).  Building on these key relationships is necessary to soliciting gifts for the institution.  Serving as a key member of an integrated development and alumni relations department, the Director will be part of a collaborative and collegial team.  The Director will work on building existing alumni relations while helping to create new ones. The Director will also work to expand alumni relations efforts to be more inclusive of alumni from all schools including NYMC’s School of Medicine, School of Health Sciences and Practice, and the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences. 


The Director will also play a leadership role in NYMC’s annual fund activities, including working with direct mail vendors, coordinating online appeals using Netcommunity, coordinating Giving Tuesday efforts, and coordinating annual Days of Giving campaign using ScaleFunder software.  The Director will oversee and grow the Chancellor’s Circle, NYMC’s annual fund recognition society. 


  • Create and implement a comprehensive alumni relations plan to increase the outreach to and engagement of alumni of New York Medical College, for each of its three schools with an ultimate goal of increasing fundraising activity.
  • Determine goals and measurable performance metrics with respect to all alumni engagement activities, including a tie to philanthropic support by alumni.
  • Proactively devise, oversee the planning and successful execution of various alumni focused events that are sponsored by NYMC, and/or hosted by lay leaders. These include small parlor type meetings, reunion gatherings, and other events.
  • Oversee NYMC’s annual fund activities, including working with direct mail vendor, coordinating online appeals using Netcommunity, coordinating Giving Tuesday efforts, coordinating annual Days of Giving campaign using ScaleFunder software, and overseeing the Chancellor’s Circle, NYMC’s leadership annual fund recognition society. 
  • Create and implement communications plan to alumni including traditional, online, and social media.  Devise relevant metrics to track the impact and success of such communications efforts.
  • Bring alumni activities for all schools under one broad based alumni relations plan that would engage alum and cultivate giving with measurable goals and metrics.   This would include all outreach efforts among alum of the School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences and the School of Health Sciences and Practices with its newly formed Alumni Council.
  • Responsible, along with the Director of Advancement Services, for overseeing Blackbaud NetCommunity site as well as the Graduway site.  Work with relevant NYMC faculty, staff, administration, alumni and students to make stakeholders aware of the program and its benefits and implementing the roll-out of the program.  Create a plan incorporating measurable goals to track its impact and success. 
  • Create a customer service protocol for alumni, parents and legacy applicants who call, email or visit the NYMC campus.
  • Manage one full time and one half time support staff members (both positions are currently vacant).
  • Serve as collaborative team member of the Department of Development and Alumni Relations and perform other tasks as assigned.


(A.) Education requirement:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

(B.) Licenses or certifications:

  • N/A.

(C.) Technical/computer skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Proficiency in Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge and Netcommunity strongly preferred. Experience with Graduway and/or ScaleFunder also helpful, but not required.
  • Proficiency in social media.

(D.) Prior experience:

  • 5 – 7 years’ experience in an alumni relations department preferably in a medical school or other higher education institution. Demonstrated success in setting and achieving goals.
  • Volunteer management experience with high level committees.
  • Management experience of support staff.

(E.) Other skills/requirements:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and creative.
