Overview

Research Associate at the Genomics Core Laboratory, Department of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology, New York Medical College. Excellent molecular laboratory skills and great attention to details are very much needed. Will work closely with the core director, perform routine molecular biology and NGS procedures, maintain the laboratory work and experimental records.

Responsibilities

  1. Perform routine molecular biology laboratory duties, such as DNA/RNA extraction, quantification, quality-check, PCR, qPCR, and all associated library prep for NGS.
  2. Perform and document all specimen test procedures with accuracy, consistency, and timeliness, in accordance with laboratory protocols and regulatory guidelines.
  3. Maintain, troubleshoot and perform day-to-day work on NGS and automation systems; and assist with the generation and updating of laboratory protocols.
  4. Perform basic lab maintenance tasks, such as ordering laboratory reagents and other supplies, and keeping detailed laboratory records.

Qualifications

(A.) Education requirement:

Minimum: Master degree; preferred: Ph.D.; in the fields of molecular biology and/or related.

(C.) Technical/computer skills:

  • Proficiency with basic laboratory calculations, such as dilutions and weights; and strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, and clients.

(D.) Prior experience:

  • Minimum 2 years wet lab experience of molecular biology procedures.
  • Previous experience with NGS would be an advantage.

 

(E.) Physical and Environmental Demands:

Physical:

  • Ability to work with sensitive materials and scientific equipment

Environmental:

  • Basic sciences wet laboratory setting.
  • May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.
  • May at times require working with or being in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • May perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator.
  • May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.
