The Senior EH&S Coordinator will play a key role in supporting New York Medical College’s comprehensive environmental, safety, occupational health, and research and clinical compliance programs in support of and under the general supervision of the department director


  1. Facilitates the laboratory registration program. Performs routine audits of laboratories, facilities, and programs.  Maintains comprehensive and accurate records of inspections, consults with Principal Investigators (PIs) and lab personnel on inspection findings and provides appropriate recommendations based on regulatory compliance and best-practice guidelines.  Develops recommendations for corrective actions.  Supervises audit closeout processes by technical staff and works with them to document audit closeouts.  
  2. Manages lab decommissioning/cleanout and new PI registration/move-in processes.   Assesses needs/serves as point person for assembling necessary scopes of work.  Serves as point person for permitting/protocol registration processes for new PIs. 
  3. Assists the Director with the day-to-day management of all research compliance and clinical infection prevention programs, including the development and revision of plans, policies, procedures, and training programs. Serves as institutional Chemical Hygiene Officer and Alternate Responsible Official for the Select Agent Program.  Assists with IBC & IACUC protocol reviews and risk assessments.  Oversees chemical, biological and radiological waste programs. Responds to/assists with the mitigation of emergencies and spills involving hazardous materials which may include biological, chemical, or radioactive substances and assisting in the response and investigation of accidents, incidents, or exposures. 
  4. Assists in the management and maintenance of records/documentation/databases, including training records, dosimetry records (for research and clinic programs), waste manifests, SDSs, and other compliance documents. 
  5. Prepares and conducts trainings on a variety of EH&S topics, including, but not limited to: biosafety, chemical safety, shipping hazardous materials, bloodborne pathogen standard, hazardous waste, CPR/AED use, radiation safety, and clinical compliance.
  6. Assists with campus-wide life safety, construction safety, and environmental and clinical compliance inspections.  Other duties as assigned.
  7. Participates in on-call rotational system providing routine and off-hours support when necessary to resolve emergency and EHS issues.


(A) Education requirement:

Bachelor’s Degree required.  MS/MPH highly preferred.


(B) Licenses or certifications:

DOJ/FBI/DMV background checks and clearances required.  HAZWOPER/RCRA/DOT HAZMAT/IATA certifications strongly preferred.  CPR/AED Instructor certification preferred. 


(C) Technical/computer skills:

Must have strong Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, Outlook, MS Teams.  Must be able to utilize Zoom. Must be able to use iPad/iPhone applications. 


(D) Prior experience:

Working knowledge of research laboratory processes, equipment and facilities is essential.

(F) Physical and Environmental Demands:



Must be able to wear a respirator.  Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.  Able to walk between multiple sites on campus.



Work within laboratories and storage areas containing chemicals, biohazards, and radioisotopes.
