Overview

Reporting to the Student Housing Superintendent, the porter will be responsible for performing routine and minor repairs and maintenance in student housing units and in common areas of student housing facilities and surrounding areas; responding to calls for maintenance and repairs from residents in student housing and performing the duties of a student housing porter.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and minor repairs and maintenance such as changing electric heaters, fixing outlets, replacing switches, drain and faucet repairs, replacing light bulbs, plastering holes in walls and minor painting, in housing units and in common areas of student housing facilities.
  • Perform routine and scheduled preventative maintenance of heating, plumbing, air conditioning, electrical and fire safety systems and equipment.
  • Respond to calls for maintenance and repairs from residents in student housing units and perform repairs and maintenance as scheduled with student residents.
  • Perform minor repairs as necessary in vacant units.
  • Escort outside contractors (including exterminator) performing work to student housing.
  • Assist Student Housing Superintendent to ensure that housing facilities and property are properly maintained.  
  • Ensure that repair and maintenance service requests are appropriately managed and rectified.
  • Assist with student lockout. On call as needed for vacation coverage, time off etc.       
  • Lawn mowing, leaf blowing, plowing, snow blowing sidewalks, operating small equipment/vehicles, planting, mulching and pruning as needed. 

Qualifications

  • The individual should possess a high school diploma, trade school or equivalent GED certificate combined with basic experience in building/facilities maintenance.
  • At least 5 years prior experience in building maintenance as a Handyman with demonstrated knowledge and experience operating machinery and equipment related to responsibilities of the position.
  • Should be mechanically inclined with understanding of building and equipment. 
  • Must be detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task as well as work independently.
  • Good organizational and communication skills. 
  • Must be diplomatic in dealing with the public and exercise sound judgment. 
  • Must be able to communicate in English through speech, reading and writing skills.
  • Ability to climb ladders, transfer/move items weighing up to 75 pounds is required.
  • Indoor work, some of which is performed in space not always air-conditioned. Work sometimes performed on/near operating equipment.  Outdoor work performed in all climates (including inclement weather).
  • Occasional overtime for emergencies, weather related assistance and holiday coverage.

Minimum Salary

USD $24.01/Hr.
