New York Medical College (NYMC) is seeking a Laboratory Assistant for the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy in the Kwak laboratory. We are looking for candidates with strong interest in RNA biology and genetics. Supervised by the Principal Investigator (Pl), the ideal candidate will assist in conducting experiments and analyzing/interpreting data. The candidate will assist in obtaining quotes, purchasing laboratory supplies, and maintaining reagent stocks. They will assist research related tasks including RNA sequencing methods, cell/tissue assays, and other duties as assigned.
Research: Under general supervision provide technical support and carry out most experiments independently in a molecular biology laboratory. Provide complex technical lab support by performing a broad range of complex laboratory and research related tasks including novel nascent RNA sequencing and combined metabolic RNA labeling-sequencing. Perform RNA manipulations using extractions from mammalian/human cells or other tissue samples. Perform DNA quantification, gel electrophoresis, PCR, cloning, quantitative PCR. Perform complex molecular experiments such as high throughput preparation of multiple RNA samples, single cell samples and next-generation sequencing.
Lab duties: Responsible for day-to-day laboratory duties; organize laboratory workflow, receive and maintain database of supplies. Develop and maintain complex experimental and computational laboratory records. Provide overall maintenance of the laboratory; clean lab ware, stock media and order lab supplies, manage laboratory waste streams, and assist in keeping the lab orderly. Prepare moderately complex stains, media, buffers, and reagents, such as chemical RNA modification reagents.
Shipping process : Process and handle all incoming sample shipments. Unpack frozen or dry samples and ensure proper storage by transferring to freezers or dry storage areas. Update and maintain sample databases and records. Organize sample collections and RNA extracts in freezers. Handle the packaging and shipping of samples and materials to/from other laboratories, via various carriers. Requires training for dry ice shipping.
Safety requirements : Adhere to lab safety protocols with a solid understanding of laboratory safety techniques and procedures. Ensure the proper disposal of laboratory waste and hazardous materials. Follow direction and training as needed.
Training and professional development : Pursue individual professional development as determined jointly with supervisor. As directed, attend seminars and training to promote and communicate expertise and knowledge in lab. Attend training and expansion of skills through participation in job-related courses, seminars and workshops.
Other duties as assigned
Education requirement: High school diploma (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
Prior experience: 2 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in molecular biology labs.
Other skills/requirements: Must be willing to work with animal and human tissue samples under appropriate protective conditions. Must be personable, flexible, proactive, and possess excellent organizational and communication skills and take pride in their work. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff. Ability to maintain a comprehensive, up to date and accurate laboratory notebook. Visual concentration, attention to detail and manual dexterity are required. Must be willing to learn new laboratory skills. Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment to accomplish required tasks. Must be able to perform repetitive work (i.e., sample processing) with a high degree of concentration and attention to detail. Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of NYMC. Experience with basic computer programs including Word and Excel is required.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in molecular biology, genomics or related disciplines; experience with microscopic and/or microfluidic devices and basic computational data analysis.
Physical: Close concentration/manual dexterity
Environmental: Chemicals/safety precautions
