The Clerkship Director ("CD")  & Family Health Center Physician ("Physician") for the New York Medical College ("NYMC") School of Medicine ("SOM") is responsible for delivering patient care at the NYMC Family Health Center  ("FHC") and for administrative duties related to the successful delivery of the Family Medicine ("FM") Clerkship in the SOM.  This is an academic faculty practice position for those interested in a visible educational administrative leadership opportunity while simultaneously engaging in the education of students and providing clinical patient care. Overall responsibility includes:  i) administrative oversite of the FM Clerkship including curriculum design, program and student evaluation; ii) provision of medical care as a physician to patients of the NYMC FHC; iii) recruitment/ retention of a community preceptor network that involves site visits, conducting feedback and annual assessment; iv) ensuring compliance with LCME requirements related to FM clerkship; v) participation in medical school curriculum planning, development, and evaluation; vi) faculty development for FM community preceptors; and vii) mentoring/advising medical students and faculty.


Administrative Responsibilities

  1. Lead the clerkship orientation and continue to be a visible teacher during the clerkship whenever possible.
  2. Work with the site directors to ensure that all students have comparable schedules, balance of required activities, and work hours.
  3. Develop and maintain core curriculum.
  4. Develop and maintain up to date course syllabus and curriculum management site.
  5. Annually review the clerkship learning objectives, ensuring they are mapped to the NYMC program objectives. Communicate any requested changes in objectives to the Phase 2 and 3 Subcommittee ("SC") of the Education and Curriculum Committee ("ECC") and the ECC.
  6. Attendance at monthly Phase 2 and 3 SC and ECC meetings.
  7. Attendance at student academic advancement and promotions committee meetings as requested.
  8. Meet with the Phase 2 Director and/or Assistant Dean for Clinical Sciences at least twice per year to review clerkship progress.
  9. Meet with the Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education ("UME") annually to review clerkship performance.
  10. Participate in the Transition to Clerkship course, Transition to Residency courses, and the Phase 2 Clinical Competency Exam

Student Feedback, Assessment, and Remediation

  1. Design appropriate clerkship assessments, including standardized patient exercises and simulation activities for formative and summative assessment.
  2. Inform the Phase 2 and 3 SC and the ECC of proposed significant changes in assessment strategy.
  3. Schedule assessments, including shelf exams and clinical skills assessments, with an exam schedule issued by June 1st for the entire academic year to be posted to the Clerkship’s Site on NYMC's learning management system.
  4. Ensure that students receive midterm feedback by clerkship midpoint.
  5. Issue student letter grades and narrative feedback within 6 weeks of the end of the clerkship.
  6. Immediately communicate identified student problems to the Office of Student Affairs.
  7. Meet with all students requiring assistance or remediation, triaging as appropriate.

Program and Faculty Evaluation

  1. Review student evaluations of the clerkship after each rotation, identifying priorities and problems, and reviewing with the Phase 2 director and UME deans as needed.
  2. Ensure that faculty, department chairs, and site deans receive feedback about faculty teaching performance regularly and at least bi-annually or as opportunities for improvement are identified, as well as an annual summary report.
  3. Ensure that program directors receive summarized feedback on the teaching performance of each resident at least annually; directly communicate any identified challenges to the program directors.
  4. Attend all clerkship student liaison meetings, developing a list of responses to address student concerns where appropriate.
  5. Work with the UME office and others in completing an Annual and Triennial Course Review


  1. Supervise preceptors to ensure site comparability and quality.
  2. Visit preceptors and clinical sites; complete documentation as requested.


  1. Counsel students for career development using materials provided by the Office of Student Affairs.
  2. Write letters of recommendation as requested by students.

Professional Development

  1. Maintain certification in specialty discipline.
  2. Attend/participate in Medical Education Grand Rounds.
  3. Engage in professional development (e.g. attend national clerkship director meeting, etc.).
  4. Pursue scholarly endeavors leading to academic promotion.

Patient Care

  1. Maintain a patient panel at the Family Health Center, working 0.5 FTE on average onsite.
  2. Complete medical documentation and review of patient results in a timely fashion.
  3. Maintain active credentials with accepted insurance companies and respond promptly for requests for information from billing or insurance companies.
  4. Supervise medical assistant, receptionist, medical students working at the Family Health Center
  5. Participate in ongoing quality improvement activities.


Education requirement:

  • MD/DO degree or equivalent

Licenses or certifications:

  • Board certification/-eligibility in Family Medicine discipline
  • Eligible for full licensure in NY state and DEA control certificate

Technical/computer skills:

  • Adept at Microsoft Office suite, web-based programs such as EMR, LCMS+ and Learning Space, excellent written and spoken communication skills, venipuncture, IM, and ID injection

Prior experience:

  • At least three (3) years teaching and working in an academic health center preferred.

Minimum Salary

USD $173,600.00/Yr.

Maximum Salary

USD $217,000.00/Yr.
